John Jervis (1735-1823) Admiral of the Fleet. He served in the West Indies as an able seaman and later midshipman; he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1755. Jervis saw considerable service during the latter half of the eighteenth century and commanded the Foudroyant at the battle of Ushant in 1778. He attained the rank of admiral in 1795 and was commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean at the battle of Cape St. Vincent. Although the greater proportion of the Spanish fleet escaped, many were disabled and four were captured. The battle was generally regarded as a considerable victory for the British who were greatly outnumbered. As a reward, Jervis was created Earl St Vincent, received a pension of £ 3,000 and the freedom of the City of London. |
